The Tallahassee Serinas Synchronized Swim Team was established over 25 years ago. It is a year-round competitive program sponsored by the City of Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department. The program is made up of girls age 7-19. In order to join the team the girls must demonstrate the ability to swim a length of the pool (25 yards) without stopping or touching the bottom or side of the pool. From this point on the skill levels progress from novice to intermediate to age group Junior Nationals to age group Senior Nationals to National Elite. The novice and intermediate level swimmers practice twice a week, age group swimmers three days a week, while Junior and Senior teams may practice 3-5 days per week. The season begins in September, and we compete from January to July.

The Serinas have a strong competitive program in Florida and the U.S. with top finishers at most meets. Synchronized swimming is one of the few sports which allows the girls to compete as they learn. The novice (beginner) level swimmers travel all over the state of Florida and compete their very first year. They compete against other girls their own age and skill level.

At a competition the girls compete in a variety of events. Each girl will participate in figure competition demonstrating four "figures". Figures are sequences of movement performed in the water before a panel of judges. Scores are based on the individual swimmer's ability to demonstrate grace, flexibility, poise, control and skill. The other events of a swim meet include solos, duets, trios and team routines (4 or more swimmers). These routines are swam to music and are choreographed to the piece. Routines, unlike figures, allow the swimmers to demonstrate their artistic abilities along with the skills required in figures. At the age group level the swimmers, themselves, often choose their music, design their swimsuits, design and create their headpieces
and choreograph their own routines.
